    Humanized management is the internal sustainable development of the enterprise. The business owner or manager like an architect who is good at the application of the different materials with a careful arrangement to build a solid house, while who know both these “materials” strengths and weaknesses and complement each other to create thousands of landscape patterns. Further, for the enterprise, the stability of the staff can be said to be a cornerstone of stability. The cost of frequent entry and quit which is the greatest opportunity cost that will be paid by companies eventually. If the enterprise does not inherently touch the concept of staff, then it will never have really their own employees. What worries me is that the reality of commercialization and materialization. Although companies understand and willing to try to do so, how many employees really care about business profit and loss. So I think there may need more guidance and create cohesion.

      The business’s architect (business owner/manager) can be a servant leader. The servant leader show’s interest in the employees as people, insisting on excellence and inspiring them to be the best they can be regardless of education level or position. “Everyone can be great because anybody can serve.” I believe in that supportive environment, employee’s will care about their company’s profit and loss because they have pride in their company and feel they play an important role in its success.

        Absolutely, whatever the education level is, people should be regarded as equal. Servant leader emphasizes on employee’s psychological construction that is important base to promote task performance. Therefore, as servant leaders, although they aim to maximize the profits their servant approach is to inspire, care and help people first instead of full squeezing employee as the tool of creating wealth for company. In that way, everyone feel they are taken seriously and thus willing to try best to carry out their commitment.

        Yes, I agree with you. The relationship between leaders and employees are really important in companies. Leaders should not only order employees to finish jobs but also should realize the potential of employees. Leaders should not be isolated. On the contrary, leaders should know what employees are satisfied or dissatisfied with.

      Reading your comment, I think it is a great point that a group needs a people who lead every one to finish the programs. However, the premise of this situation is every member in the group would like to do their best to achieve their goals. Surely, leaders pay an important role in the group and
      should give the primary targets for the members. Members would like to reach their achievement for improving themselves. Servant leadership is a good method, which can be used in some situation. In normal conditions, leaders still need to be a leader to employees.

      Admittedly, in today’s competitive business environment, effective leadership is a critical element. Business leader must be able to provide inspiration, motivation and clear direction to their team. Effective leader and leadership can help guide the direction of a group. With different people working in different talent, it’s easy for a group to ignore how their work might be interacting with other people’s efforts. Effective leadership can aid in individual duties and activities, improving the efficiency of a team and their overall productivity. Good leadership is often the fuel of progress, be it in a business, organization or movement.

    I do believe management and leadership are two different things. I have seen managers micro-manage and create discontent among team members. I have seen leaders inspire.

    Servant leadership offers the opportunity for everyone to contribute. I love Wee’s assertion that if you get your people what they need, they will get you everything you need. By extending, sacrificing and serving others, authority is built and influence follows.

    “The real enemy is fuzzy thinking on the part of good, intelligent, vital people, and their failure to lead, and to follow servants as leaders. Too many settle for being critics and experts. There is too much intellectual wheel spinning, too much retreating into “research,” too little preparation for and willingness to undertake the hard and high risk tasks of building better institutions in an imperfect world , too little disposition to see “the problem” as residing in here and not out there.

    The discipline of Listening, true listening, is the earmark of the servant leader. ‘How can I use myself to serve best?’ is applicable to all aspects of life. In a way, servant leadership is a corporate version of The Golden Rule “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”

      I strongly agree with you. As you have mentioned, “Treat others as you would like to be treated”. This is a good guide that tells people how to make a good relationship with others.

      Excellent leadership does not mean the good management skills. Good leadership is about what can you do for others and how can we do for others. People always respect the leaders who are selflessness. Because these kinds of leaders can make the organizations or employees achieve sustainable development.

      with the development of community economic, servant leadership has made a huge contribution to the society. Because more and more leaders realize that good leadership can not exist without selflessness, honor, and sacrifice.

      Yes. I go agree with that “How can I use myself to serve best” which is more about dedication. We can think about that when each team members spontaneously to do more work which is not their responsibility, perhaps the work is insignificant and only take you few minutes, but it may save much time and effort for the people who have to do that. Then it is conceivable that the work of the entire team in this ideal atmosphere will be very efficient and harmonious.

      I agree with you that management and leadership are two different things. Management helps and directs efforts towards a definite purpose. All businesses and social organizations need a manager to manage their employees. Management has the ability to control the company and solve the problem.
      Leadership is a process by which leader influences the employees’ thoughts, attitude and behavior. A good business always needs a high-quality leader to set directions and goals for all employees. There are two type of leadership, transactional leadership and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership means the leaders always have much more power than the followers. However, transformational leadership focus on the beliefs, needs, and values of their followers.

    I have learned a lot after reading this article. Servant leadership plays an indispensable role in the human development. Serving for others is one of the most vital factors in servant leadership. A great number of manager of managers often think that what others can do for themselves or their enterprise. Under the circumstance, from my own perspective, command and control are the worst approaches in management. Because employees will feel stressful in the process of working and this situation will reduce the work efficiency of employees.
    Leadership is a type of art. Not everyone has the talent of management. But people can strive to change themselves to get the leadership skill. As the author has mentioned, “Leadership is not management, leadership is who we are”. when we know who we are, we will know what can we do for others. Sacrifice is another key point in servant leadership. The world needs the excellent leaders who comprehend sacrifice, honor, and selflessness.

      Mere command and control in leadership would definitely be hated by followers, comparing to servant leadership. But I would urge that under some certain circumstance, such as in emergency, or in the military, that way of leadership would be advisable.

But people can strive to change themselves to get the leadership skill. most of us are not born for being a leader, but we must know that how to learn to be a leader.     This article makes me be interested in the term “servant leadership”, and I google the story of it.
    Servant leadership is a term promoted by Robert Greenleaf in the early 1970s. After reading a novel by Herman Hesse, he decided to describe a type of leadership displayed by a character in the story. The story is like this: A group travelers are on a journey, which is arduous. Their servant performs menial chores and keeps the group motivated and moving forward on the journey by singing and otherwise encouraging them to keep going. When the servant mysteriously disappears, the group falls apart and abandons the journey. Years later, the servant comes back and reveals himself as the group’s leader. That is literally how “servant leadership” was “used.”
    Greenleaf used the term to explain his view that leaders have ethical obligations to their followers to care for and nurture them and that people become recognized as leaders when they start developing their followers and others’ interests and needs before their own. The core of this concept is the ethical imperative for a leader to care about, develop, and protect the people in the system, organization, or group the leader is leading.
    I think it is a good method of leadership. This one is unique and connects everyone in the group together.members like to be cared and concerned by their leaders. Servane is a good and brand idea to develop ourselves leadership in the future.

    In this article, the author believes that anytime we extend ourselves, sacrifice, and serve others, we build authority and thereby influence. If you get your people what they need, they will get you everything you need. I can’t totally agree this point, Leadership is a mix of knowledge, values, skills and behaviors. Leadership can make or break a company. This is why so many companies pay several million dollars for a new CEO. Different groups will have different beliefs or values about what makes an effective leader. We all acknowledge that effective leadership is an essential requirement in order to achieve organizational goals. Compare with a servant leader, what employees needed is a leader who can inspires everyone in the company from the top echelons to the frontline, and gets all team members working toward the common goal. If the leader is knowledgeable about the operation of the business, their employees will trust them and follow their lead. When you set an example of excellence in everything you do, from the daily habits to the big decisions you make, you send a strong message that this leader knows the business and care about it, when people see that, they will give you their best.

      I tend to agree with this. As we have discussed, leadership is very contextual. While some situations may require a servant leadership approach, others may not. In my own personal experiences, I have been more inspired by those who strive for excellence in all that they do and less so by those who spend too much time worrying about me. There are certainly many others who are motivated by leadership by example, and many other forms of leadership. So while I am not a detractor of servant leadership, I am also unprepared to say it is the be all and end all.

      Based on the idea that servant leadership is a commitment to love and service, servant leadership places on the self. The organizational structure of the servant-type leadership is completely reversed with the traditional organizational structure, where the servant-like leader is at the bottom of the organizational structure and supports the people who have completed the work. The main responsibility of the leader is to meet any needs of the service organizer, including listening to others and working together to develop a vision that everyone can have. The servant leader becomes a conduit for other creative people who are becoming servant leaders to contribute creative ideas.     This article talks about the definition of Servant leadership for me. Actually, servant leadership is a new viewpoint of leadership role. People attempt to change the role between leaders and employees to optimize management. The new style of leadership makes the interest of subordinate above organizational benefits. It realized the leap from the object to the subject. Compared with the traditional leadership theories, it can maximally motivate employees, and make employees to forwardly serve the organization. In the work of Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant leadership has 10 features: Listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, Commitment to the growth of people, and Building community. These features almost serve employees, helping and encouraging subordinate to develop themselves. This leadership can create trust with subordinate, through show leaders’ special qualities. The servant leadership is a long-term work. It can have an positive effect on the internal organization.

    In today’s volatile and turbulent economic environment, trust is the foundation. Service and being served are a two-way relationship. What is the worth using is that servant leadership begins with the cultivation of authority relative to the servants. Advantages: servant leadership is a long-term way of work, life development and change, and it can stimulate the positive changes within the community. Servant leadership is somewhat similar to Transformational Leadership, but transformational leaders are more focused on collaboration. While both show a deep concern for the leader, the servant leadership highlights service characteristics, while the transformational leadership demands that the leader serve the organizational goals.
    Cons: Servant leadership is not a quick fix method; it cannot see the results immediately. Moreover, being perceived as “weak”, listening too much, and having too much empathy may lead to indecision and lack of leadership. The leadership is not absolute; the simple servants could bring this team bad influence. Moreover, each person’s behavior does not have a fixed pattern; leaders need to use different method to lead for different employees. And there is a problem that what if employees are dependent on their leaders because of the servant leadership?

    Management is deductive. Management is about coping with complexity. With the development of society, more and more businesses appear. Every business includes lots of departments, such as sales and marketing department, HR department, accounting department and administrative department. And lots of employees make up an organized business. So every department needs a manager to establish goals and detailed steps for allocating resources. Companies manage complexity by planning and budgeting. They set up their short-term goals, then achieve them. It is an effective way to increase efficiency.
    By contrast, leadership is about coping with change. Leadership is inductive. Leadership always begins by setting a direction and using strategies to achieve the vision. That means leadership is about collecting data and analysis the information, then setting the directions and strategies. Setting the directions is a long-term goal. The final target for the leadership is to cope with change.
    So as a leader, we need to paly a very important role in a business or an organization. Also as a leader, we need to be good at human resources. It is very important to set up the company culture and achieve the company value.

    In my opinion, this article talked about servant leader, One of the major qualities of a servant leader is that he or she enjoys working with people. Servant leaders serve the people on the project. They also serve the people in the organization. They might have to keep the goals of the project in mind, as they facilitate the people. Servant leaders for geographically distributed teams need to learn to build trust, to help people learn to collaborate, to help people learn to speak in a way that creates teamwork, and to avoid the management insertion that too often occurs. There are many potential pitfalls in geographically distributed agile teams. This leadership style is an instrument employees use to reach the goal rather than an commanding voice that moves to change. This leadership style, in a manner similar to democratic leadership, tends to achieve the results in a slower time frame than other styles, although employee engagement is higher.

    “Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to change himself.” However, servant leadership does. They take the responsibility of the leader but are willing to be servant for others. Servant leaders first put themselves in the position of servant to serve others and thus build authority to influence. They are different from those leaders who serve others after guaranteeing their leader status, authority, and influence. Servant leaders with empathy listen, heal, and persuade people. They are also aware of the whole situation and farseeing about future challenges. They not only take the responsibility of stewardship but also focus on the growth of everyone. We can image that if we have a servant leader with honor and selflessness in our community, whether our life or work will be taken good care of. That‘s what servant leaders do to improve management efficiency through extending and sacrificing themselves.
    We may meet many great people in our whole life, but there are few people who can really influence you. I used to have an experience as an administrative assistant and my manager is such a person who has the ability to influence others. I was a new inexperienced person then. But she did not let me feel the difference with others, but gave me a lot of materials to help me study and get progress. Sometimes she shared her work stories with me and reminded me. She not only helped me with my work but also cared about my life. Actually, her behavior reflects not only the servant leadership, but also the charismatic leadership because her capacity for work and her flexible leadership skills completely make me willing to work for her.

    Servant leadership is the best way to lead people because it focus on caring, inspiring and helping people as human but not as a part of the organization. By doing this can achieve true leading, since people will feel like having a strong connection with the leader and also the organization. Instead of commanding and controlling to change people, building and encouraging people seems like a win-win situation.
    Everyone can serve but not everyone will serve. “Serving, sacrificing, and seeking the greatest good for those you lead”, which is a difficult task. Every organization is a complex environment that involves all kinds of profit relationship. “ The road to servant leadership lies not in trying to fix or change others but in changing and improving ourselves.” I think it means first you need to know how to serve then you know how to lead.

      I agree with you as the connection between servant leadership and followers. It does give followers a feeling of close relationships with leaders without the traditional gap. Leaders are no longer the leaders but the partners who really care and assist you.

    In one sense I can subscribe to the servant leadership model, but I must be honest in saying it is troublesome in other respects.

    I believe that the approach of giving yourself, as a leader, to the purpose of letting others be their best selves has great merit and is particularly suited to the millennial generation of workers. However I see issues with the author’s statement akin to “not every employee is going to get Microsoft-like sales”, but everyone is capable of being the best that they can be.

    The employee who is achieving microsoft-like sales will not be impressed if the employee next to them is achieving far less success in their role but is deemed to be successful because “it is their best self”. Leadership and management are not the same thing, but a leader who subscribes to ‘servant leadership’ in the manner which the author describes is sure going to make the job of management extremely challenging!

How to keep this plan with no influences in their business? These questions also need to think by the managers who want to do servant leadership.

        Klein and House provide an analogy, “while servant leadership sparks the service fire, employees’ self-identity becomes the flammable material wherein a highly competitive climate makes the service fire bigger by adding in more oxygen while the flammable material is ablaze.”

        Increasingly, “servant-led” companies are outperforming their competitors in many aspects. These companies recognize that the most important single driver of employee engagement is whether or not employees feel that their leaders really care about them. These businesses emphasize the importance of creating a great place to work, building great relationships with all stakeholders, contributing to the community, and focusing on a high quality of life. Their owners had been influenced by the ideas behind servant leadership. Companies you might be familiar with are Southwest Airlines, Home Depot, TDIndustries, and Starbucks.

    When I finished this reading, a question was shown in my mind? In the current society, do we need to focus on the profit or employees culture? For instance, in the fast food restaurants, employees have to do their job in the fast paced environment, in this type of working environment, does it really useful to increase servant leadership. As we know, fast paced working environment means high pressure and lots of work in the short period. Could we really focus on the employee’s emotion with no influences of the working effectiveness?       I agree that for servant leadership to be 100% successful the environment has to be conducive to this style of leadership. There are businesses, such as fast food restaurants, that rely on very specific procedures to ensure consistency of product and service. Employees and front line managers are required to carry out tasks in the manner dictated by company policies. This environment could make it very difficult for workers to feel any sense of empowerment. However, I do believe that there is still an opportunity for the leadership, in this “corporate head office,” to build environments that are poised and that consciously strive to nurture the development and growth of their employees. Some fast food restaurants strive to provide flexible working hours for students and seniors for example. This would be one example of how they address the human side of the organization.

    “Servant leadership”, I think it is a concept that easier to say than to do. Traditionally, when a person is on the position of a “leader”, it would be difficult for him/her to consider himself/herself as a “servant” to the people that are led by him/her. However, as the gradual awakening of self-awareness by people in the modern world, the traditional way of leading people from high above is encountering more and more collision. Nowadays, people would appreciate the leaders who treat them as genuine human beings with diverse emotions, rather than just being treated as labor forces.
    There is no doubt that “servant leadership” requires more skills, selflessness, and sacrifice from the leaders. But if it could be implemented well, it can achieve far more better outcomes than traditional ways of leadership.

The servant leadership is a good way to explain what kind of leaders can increase the benefit of the company to affect others so that the company can develop healthily. The servant leadership emphasizes integrity for others, not only including his employees but also customers and other people.     Servant leadership is not only a business approach. I have heard someone define a servant leader as a person who can not sit on the horizon of this world. Teddy Roosevelt once said that the world is only a place where everyone is suitable for everyone, is a great place to live. Servant leadership is greater than the organization, it must include the internal and external groups and the interests of all employees sense of responsibility. In a traditional organization, the leader is accustomed to dictating, and in the organization of the servant leader, it is a show of hands. In traditional organizations, people tend to shirk their responsibilities and say, “This is not my responsibility.” In the organization of the servant leader, people say, “I am here, please send me.”

But when your leader who respects you, loves you, inspires you, develop you, you will come from the heart to execute the command of the leader.     Servant leadership can be applied in various situation. Instead of traditional leadership, servant leadership can be more gentle and easily accepted by most people. In other cases, servant leaders are sometimes recognized as a lot of effective due to serious decisions, while traditional strong leadership will usually have a quick and workable decision without losing time. Cases in many national owned companies in China are examples of strong leadership more acceptable than servant leadership. However, industry such as IT and new technology organizations, agree with the advantages of servant leadership.

    Different from other leaderships which put leaders in the center of the organizations to let employees serve the leader, servant leaders will try their best to meet the needs of employees. If we say leader-first is on the top of the pyramid, servant leadership is the bottom up principle. Instead of motivating works by leaders’ characteristics or behaviors, let them satisfied what leaders served them and the satisfaction will transfer to passion for putting into work. Thus, I would say servant leadership is more concern about human well-being and growth. However, my perspective is the result may turn to another direction if leaders only focus on serving employees. The reason I said that is the needs of the employees will become more and more, that may turn employees only want to receive what that want rather than give more or the same what they receive. Working efficiency and performance will decrease in that case. Thus, a combination of leader-first and servant-first leadership would have the efficient way to lead employees.

      I agree with you,The leadership is very important. The leaders are very important for a company. From a small action can reflect a person’s moral cultivation. For instance, Ford’s founder Ford had entered the company was “pick up waste paper” this simple action. At that time, Ford had just graduated from college and apply for a car company. In a highly competitive environment, the great leader should first be a service person, with the mentality of the service, and others to establish good interpersonal relationships and full communication. During the second lecture, Trump was caught out a short video of discrimination against women before the event, so many women were dissatisfied with him. Although this is a small thing, but it can reflect the Trump’s daily moral behavior. Another identical example, Hillary Clinton served as US Secretary of State for four years, has been using personal mailbox office. After she enrolled in the presidential election, the matter was exposed by the opposition Republican and got a strong condemnation. According to the verification, at least three hundred e-mails in more than 30,000 e-mails during Hillary’s employment may be suspected of containing confidential information.     I absolutely agree with the servant leadership approach because it is based on nurturing relationships to motivate people as opposed to using a command and control approach to motivate. The success of this model, however, is dependent on the personal characteristics the leader possesses. As we know from the material covered in this class, and from prior classes and personal experiences, leadership cannot be taught. An effective leader has the innate ability to influence people. The author mentions that influence must be earned and that you cannot change and improve the actions of others unless you are willing to first focus on changing and improving yourself. Today’s working environment is diverse and a good leader must be willing to take a step back, observe the behaviors of others, learn from those behaviors, and finally, apply strategies that will work within the context and process of the organization. If we want to be sustainable we must be able to evolve and adjust to change. One way to adjust to change is for leaders to provide guidance but allow followers to self-organize and collectively work together to meet objectives. Creating a poised environment, where people are comfortable and have a voice, is key to ensuring that change is not perceived as a threat but rather as an opportunity for growth and long term sustainability.

    The preceding paragraph is an introduction to Rosemary Burns, an influential leader in my life. I consider myself blessed to have been called to a lifetime of teaching within the Catholic School system and the fact that my reality embraces values taught by example. Rosemary has been a strong witness to our faith in the world. Her strong personal relationship with God, love, respect and forgiveness of others, and authenticity have had a strong influence on our school community. Working with her has given me a benchmark for what good leadership is. “Servant” is the foundational word in servant-leader. As a servant-leader, Rosemary is servant at heart. She was servant before, during, and after holding a principal’s position. This is who she is, servant first. The leadership position was accepted, then given up upon her retirement, but her servant nature remains. Rosemary is motivated by service, humble, and first among equals. Other features of Rosemary’s leadership include: focused on followers, empowering, and empathetic. According to van Dierendonck, these are six key characteristics of servant leaders. Until recently, I had not realized the uniqueness of my workplace experience. The experience can be summarized in Greenleaf’s quote: “There is something subtle communicated to one who is being served and led if, implicit in the compact between servant-leader and led, is the understanding that the search for wholeness is something they share.”

    Servant leadership is an emerging theory; there is no consensus amongst academics regarding its definition. Stephen Prosser goes so far as to suggest that if there is a theory of servant leadership, it should be a theory of servanthood, not leading. The theoretical framework continues to evolve and empirical studies are limited. Because it is atypical of our Western conceptualization of leadership, and a relatively new field of research, there is much to be learned. I went back to the prescribed textbook for the Leadership course and found one page of text devoted to servant leadership, in the contemporary concepts section. Our MBAC 6106 professor incorporated Spiritual and Servant Leadership into his lecture series. I sensed that some of my classmates were quite uncomfortable with having this value-based approach incorporated in a Leadership course. Is it because they have predominantly encountered a leader-first paradigm? There was a general affirmation of transformational leaders who, from my understanding, put their organization’s needs first and work under the premise that the realization of organizational goals is more important than followers’ interests. I can only hope that strong natural servants, who have the potential to lead, open their hearts to serve and lead. These servant-leaders will share power, focus on the needs of others first, helping them succeed, whilst benefiting organizations and making our world a better place. They will plant a seed of service in those they lead.

    This article gives me a different view of leadership that a leader should makes sure that the needs of others are being served. Legitimate leadership is built upon serving, sacrificing, and seeking the greatest good for those you lead. There are always more stuffs than managers, stuffs are the major production of any organization. if a leader really serve every stuffs he lead, and make them motivated and creative, that’s the most productive situation they have. Think about this, “Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to change himself.” So, stop trying to fix or change others but in changing and improving ourselves.
